BEACH BUMS

Within twenty minutes of driving north on the M4 from Umhlanga, you can be sitting literally on Causerina beach, sipping on a cocktail or with an ice cold draught in your hand and looking out on the Indian Ocean!

Beach Bums has been around for many years, as a basic backpackers lodge and pub, but of late it has regained much popularity and on the weekends it's buzzing...We went yesterday around 3.30 ish and it was still busy, but soon the lunchtime and some worse for wear revelers, made way for the sundowner crowd.(even though we cannot actually see the sun go down on the East coast)

There have been some upgrades, but this is still a casual, laid back and rustic "watering"and "eating" hole! The dress code here is slops, shorts and t-shirts, so forget wearing any designer heels, as heels and sand don't mix! The beach is literally under foot and serves as the dance floor also. They do have live entertainment, although we mistook the guy singing and playing guitar yesterday, as some "arb" guy doing Karaoke, so don't expect great things. It does however all make for a vibey, fun afternoon in the sun....by the way..there is plenty of shade and an undercover section if it rains.

What surprised me the most about Beach Bums was the food! On a previous visit many years ago, the food was average...in fact below average, but yesterday it was good and I suggest you make it part of your visit. It offers the usual "pub grub" menu, and three of us soon devoured a very "moorish" Tomato, Basil and Buffalo Mozzarella focaccia, an excellent bowl of Peri Peri Chicken Livers and some sticky Buffalo wings. These were starter portions and were priced around R40, the prices generally are good and there was nothing that would "break the bank". I could see other dishes being served around me and it all looked yummy!

Its also a great family venue, as the kids have the best playground, that being the beach, and there are no worries about spilling or messing on the tables and the floor! There is plenty of "car guarded" parking and don't be put off by the number of cars parked outside...this place can accommodate as many as the beach can hold! The service was good, as young waitrons were running around barefoot to ensure speedy service!

Next time you visit Durban, take that drive and visit Beach Bums for a "Forever Chilled" experience...

You can visit their "poor"website for more info and directions.
