AGING AND BECOMING - A REFLECTIVE ENQUIRY

I was quite excited to recently receive a book in the post to review, now normally I wouldn't do book reviews, as it really isn't my niche unless it's beauty related, but this particular book piqued my interest.
The title Aging & Becoming encouraged me to read further into the PR's e.mail and to be perfectly honest this book couldn't have come at a better time in my life...

South African author and student of Jung, Susan Scott, has teamed up with her US counterpart Susan Schwartz to write Aging and Becoming: A Reflective Enquiry, an inspirational book which is receiving rave reviews on both US and UK Amazon sites.

The book is comprised of correspondence between the two authors, which began with each writing back and forth on the letters of the alphabet oriented on the subject of aging.
The two Susans challenge the view that the older woman has little to offer. Rather, aging is an opportunity to express a more rounded out personality as the tug towards becoming authentic becomes more persistent and real. Just as many reflections occur allowing for growth and new ventures to happen.

Each writer feels the shifts on emotional, psychological, mental and physical levels.

Many losses occur at this stage of life, with friends and family dying, broken or failed partnerships, illness or incapacitation on the doorstep for many. They address and reflect on these levels, many unsaid, in an in-depth and soulful way bringing forth their own experiences and those of others. Scott explains the authors’ intention with the book: “This is not a ‘how to’ book. Nor is it a book about what, why, when and where. We’ve used personal stories and shared a few friends’ views. It speaks to our contemporary lives by illustrating the timeless trials and tribulations resonant to every generation.”

I will do a blog post once I've read the book and whilst my blog focuses on how to combat the signs of ageing with skin care products, it will be interesting to delve into the realms of emotional ageing and hopefully explain and help me to understand some of my own current feelings...

  1. Hi Hazel! Lovely to see this here thank you. I am much in favour of women taking care of their outward appearance, good haircut, using creams to keep our skins moisturised and taking all the care that enhances us. I would never go anywhere without my lipstick! And a touch of fragrance ...The emotional roller coaster of aging is another story - and is something we can also care about and take care of ... there is beauty in that too.

Incidentally, the book is available locally (South Africa) on loot.co.za for R230.

Thank you again! I'm now following you :) Pleased to have found you!

  2. Hallo Hazel,

I am a friend and admirer of both of the Susans (they compliment each other so well and they are both so crafted with words, the way they have sculpt an image of the ageing woman has become a true work of art.
I am so glad to have found this log because i am very interested in beauty as well, even though i must admit at my age I have found my perfect mascara, my perfect lipstick, my favourite perfume... The only times when I become experimental is when my favourite colour eyeshadow of a certain brand (the golden with a light brown tone in it) is being taken out of production. This happens regularly (or I do too long with my eyeshadow, that is another possibility).
Thanks for this post and for your vision on Ageing and becoming. I can't wait to read more.

    Susanne
