GOLLY! GOSH HAS LANDED

GOSH cosmetics has landed in Red Square La Lucia and I popped in recently to check it out.
I did write a post re GOSH a couple of weeks ago to read click here . I was very impressed with its positioning in store and it was well merchandised and easy to follow. The prices are good, as is the quality.I found the whole range very appealing despite some colours being very bright and bold which were not for me, but there was plenty.. that was!
The range has some "out of the ordinary" products of which a couple I have mentioned below.

These products caught my eye.

GOSH Bronzing Shimmer Powder is a new fantastic bronzing powder which gives a sun kissed summer glow. This shimmer powder has a unique combination of 5 different shades that creates a multitude of beautiful bronzed tones. Sweep a large brush over the palette and use to highlight and define cheek bones, shoulders/neck and/or cleavage.

DERMALOGICA DAILY MICROFOLIANT

I am always on the look out for good exfoliators and if you read my post a couple of weeks ago on "Exfoliate don't accumulate" to read post click here  you will know how strongly I feel about exfoliation being part of your weekly beauty regime!

No other product can give you such immediate  results. After saying this I am not a lover of daily polishers or daily exfoliators!

In my personal opinion we should exfoliate once or twice a week only.

I recently received in a "Goodie" bag the following Power Duo pack of 2 generous sized Dermalogica facial exfoliating products, this was "Just up my street".

I asked my teenage oily skinned son to try the one exfoliant in the pack, the daily microfoliant®
I will review the Gentle Cream Exfoliant in a later post.

This is a very popular product in the Dermalogica line up. It can be used by all skin types daily if recommended and it can be used even on a sensitive skin....

Gentle, Rice-based exfoliating powder activates upon contact with water, releasing Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead cells, instantly leaving skin smoother and brighter. Formulated without artificial fragrances and colours

It was easy to use and my son quite enjoyed the mixing and foaming aspect of this product....his own little bit of chemistry at the basin....it dramatically improved both the brightness and smoothness of his skin making it a great product for teenagers with oily congested skins to use regularly.

SPRAYOLOGY

No this is not about a "spray on" tan....Sprayology was only launched in SA in September, but has been around in the USA for the past 10 years....

Well! what is Sprayology  all about?

I recently attended a talk and Sprayology is a collection of Homeopathic and Vitamin Oral Sprays that have been developed using only the finest natural ingredients. They are doctor formulated and FDA regulated. Great news is that they are approved for use by children two years and upwards and what could be easier than a couple of quick sprays under their tongues? There are also no known contra indication or side effects and they don't interfere with the taking of any other medication.

They are stylishly packaged and great to carry around in your handbag. For me this is perfect as my handbag never leaves my side, therefore I would have no problem with forgetting to spray daily or when required. Another plus for me and for many, would be the fact they do not upset your stomach as conventional tablet or capsule vitamins can sometimes do, due to the fact that they are immediately absorbed into the bloodstream.

The collection comprises of 4 option categories each with sprays for specific needs.

o rejuvenate

The oral sprays in this group beauty group replenish the body’s supply of energy to relieve the symptoms of aging, helping you function at a more youthful level. All seven formulas in this collection help with age-related issues such as low energy, sex drive, menopause, weight loss and bone density.

o relieve

Common ailments are the focus of this collection. They are a cocktail of natural ingredients that have been formulated to alleviate the symptoms of everyday ailments such as sleeplessness, allergies, colds and flu, digestive issues, jet lag, hangovers.

o restore

Sprayology works at the deepest levels to restore order and balance to the complex interplay of systems within the human body. When the body is not in balance it affects how we look and feel. This category works to restore the balance disturbed by stress, toxicity and hormonal fluctuations.

o rebuild

Vitamins are vital nutrients that our bodies need for energy, optimal functionality and to prevent disease. Our bodies cannot make all vitamins, so we must take them as part of our diet through the foods we eat and through supplementation.

The Key to a supplement’s effectiveness is its ability to transport an appropriate amount of the active ingredient into the bloodstream in a timely manner. Spraying the vitamin under the tongue allows absorption directly into the body. Additionally, the delivery of vitamins and minerals by a sublingual spray is convenient, easy and tastes great.

I tested one of the Homeopathic options and used the recommended two sprays under the tongue of the "Stress Relief". It's very easy to use and they really have very little taste....
I also had a spray of the "Daily Multi" which has a lovely taste of peach.

The prices range from R210 to R250 for a quantity of 41mls.
The Sprayology range is retailed through Jennifer Eales Skin Care Clinic and other leading beauty salons and wellness centres.

COFFEE GUYS

As I was walking along the Durban beach front in the rain yesterday, I was not expecting to discover a "Yummy" Hot Chocolate, but I did!

On the north end of Ushaka municipal car park you will find the "Coffee Guys" mobile espresso van, from sunrise every morning (except Mondays). They have a catering style coffee making machine all set up in the back of their van. These guys stand and are constantly making cups of "delish" coffee, cappuccinos, espresso and hot chocolates.....
The "Coffee Guys" have quite a following amongst the surfers and walkers and now it includes me...
My hot chocolate had a lovely thick creamy head on, just how I like it!
Their coffee prices start at R10 and hot "chocs" are R15.

If you are down on the beach front and fancy a good coffee or hot choc "on the go", then stop off and try the "Coffee Guys" I think you will be pleasantly surprised....I know I was!

"day and age".

The line up for the evening consisted of the obligatory welcoming drinks and wonderful finger "snackies" all served in a pretty candle lit courtyard..Oh! and I must make mention of the great musical entertainers, who go by the "cute" name of "Veranda Panda" and very differently, they make music with machines and a violin.

Veranda Panda

Interesting presentations were given by Dermalogica, Sprayology and Bio-Therapeutic as well as a fitting tribute to Jennifer.

Local designer Terrance Bray showcased his wonderful Summer 2012/13 collection and some of the latest designs from Jenni Button were also shown.

WATER HEALTH FACTS

We all know the importance of drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water per day , but are you aware exactly how that water is utilised within the body?

Here are some interesting water facts:

Two-thirds of the human body is made up from water
Roughly 70 percent of an adult’s body is made up of water.

All of the electrical and chemical actions of the brain and central nervous system are dependent on the conductivity of electricity between the brain and sensory organs, facilitated by water.
By the time a person feels thirsty, his or her body has lost over 1 percent of its total water amount.
Stress depletes the body of water, leaving cells dehydrated.
All other liquids are processed in the body as food and do not serve the body’s water needs.

Processed foods and caffeinated drinks are dehydrating.

Water improves concentration and mental co-ordination, releases stress and enhances communication skills.
It is believed that many illnesses are caused by chronic dehydration. Lack of water cause depression, stress and anxiety as well as physical problems such as high blood pressure, migraines, pain in the joints, allergies and asthma.

Drinking water also helps to flush out toxins from the body.Though water doesn’t necessarily neutralise toxins the kidneys do use water to get rid of certain waste products. If you don’t drink enough water, your kidneys don’t have the amount of fluid they need to do their job properly.

Makes you think doesn't it? I'm off to the fridge to get my first glass of the day!

MALE VS FEMALE SKIN

Is the skin of a male the same, as the skin of a female?
The answer is no!

"Can men use the same products as a female" alas this is not as easy to answer and the reason being, is that I would rather have my man use my skincare products than no products at all!

Today as much time and effort is spent on the Research & Development of male skincare and grooming ranges as there is on women's...there is still a relatively "untapped" & lucrative male market of "soap and water" users out there.

Many years ago if a man wanted to seriously care for his skin the products available to him were very limited, but today guys have a whole host of good branded ranges to invest in, so ideally they should buy a range that is specifically formulated for men.

Here are a couple facts as to why the skin differs...

Men's skin:

On average is 25% thicker than a females.

Is more oily due to Testosterone acting on the Sebaceous Glands causing them to be more active.

Is also firmer due to the fact that it contains more Collagen and Elastin fibres which give the support & elasticity to the skin.

Is weakened & sensitised daily by shaving and use of non specialised soaps. This results in the skin being more prone to redness, irritation, cuts and dehydration.

As you can see there are several significant differences, so next time you "man" is borrowing your moisturiser suggest he looks into buying his own range....with your help of course!

FLAMMABLE SUNSCREEN RECALLED

Flammable US sunscreen recalled

AFP Relaxnews | 22 October, 2012 12:32

Oh My Goodness these users of this sun protection certainly got more than they bargained for!The maker of Banana Boat sunscreen recalled 23 spray-on products Friday saying there was a risk they could catch fire on one's skin, after reports of five people being burned in the US and Canada.

Energizer Holdings said it was recalling its popular continuous spray sunscreen "due to a potential risk of product igniting on the skin if contact is made with a source of ignition before the product is completely dry."
It cited a likely problem with the size of the spray valve opening that allows more of the volatile product to be sprayed on the skin than usual.
"As a result, the product is taking longer to dry on the skin than is typical with other continuous sprays.
"If a consumer comes into contact with a flame or spark prior to complete drying of the product on the skin,
there is a potential for the product to ignite."
The four incidents reported in the United States and one in Canada involved the use of the company's Banana Boat UltraMist Sport SPF 30 and 50 products.
St. Louis, Missouri-based Energizer said it is voluntarily removing the products from retail outlets, and notifying stores to stop selling them.
It warned that anyone using spray-on sun care products should not apply them while smoking or in proximity to flames or sparks.

DON'T ACCUMULATE EXFOLIATE! {BACK2BASICS}

As a trained Beauty Therapist, if I only had one piece of advice to offer you, it would be "Don't Accumulate Exfoliate".
Exfoliation to me is a vital step in all beauty routines.....regardless of age or skin type.
To exfoliate the skin simply means to remove a layer of dulling, drying dead cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin. It is really simply to do at home and is absolutely painless...for all those that are thinking it sounds medical we are not talking about chemical peels here!

We should all exfoliate from top to toe, but in this blog I am just going to deal with the face and neck and will cover the rest of the body in later posts!

Exfoliators, or scrubs as they are sometimes called, are readily available from all beauty houses and again it is often a case of trail and error until you hit on one that really suits you and your skin type. My favourite product has been on the market for 20 years or more but it still remains a top seller and my absolute "Must Have". More of this in a future blog...

Most of the exfoliating action in these products comes from the grains or beads that will wary in size according to the degree of exfoliation you require. The friction created by the rubbing will mechanically remove those dead cells.I would always recommend that you buy a product that contains natural exfoliating ingredients, such as seeds, ground nut shells or salts!

As a rule of thumb I always recommend that every skin type use a scrub once a week...many of the houses will tell you daily or twice a week, but to be honest, most of us don't have the time, so once is ideal....you can do twice a week if your skin is very dry. Some brands recommend daily scrubbing, which I am most definitely not a promoter of, as this just strips your skin of its own natural "Hydro Lipidic" film. (the natural moisturising, protecting barrier of oils and water).
There are two "trains" of thought regarding exfoliation and oily skins, as some recommend daily or 2-3 times a week, whilst others recommend just once every 7-10 days. I believe daily is too stimulating for an already over stimulated oily skin, so every 7-10 days is always my recommendation..Acne skins should not exfoliate, as this will cause cross infection from the rubbing  over the  pustules etc.and will aggravate an already inflamed condition. Sensitive skins were once advised not to use scrubs but today products are available for even the most sensitive skins so there is no need for you to miss out.

You should always follow the manufacturers instructions but basically they all work along the 5 minute maximum routine below:

  1. Cleanse the skin.
  2. Apply the exfoliator or scrub to a dry or slightly damp skin.
  3. Make circular movements with your 3 middle fingers on each hand, slowly and gently work upwards from the neck and onto the face massaging the product.
  4. Do exfoliate gently over the lips but not round the eye area.
  5. Take care not to drag or pull the skin too much.
  6. Exfoliate for about 3-5 minutes depending on how much of an exfoliation you require.
  7. Rinse the product off, towel dry and Tone.
  8. You can either moisturise after or ideally apply an appropriate face mask.
  9. Never exfoliate without using some form of moisturising cream afterwards.
  10. Lastly always use a facial scrub on the face and leave the body scrub for the body never use a body exfoliator on the face!!!

Of all the skincare products out there, an exfoliator is the most instantly gratifying purchase that you can make......
"Why" you may ask?

  • Your skin will appear instantly brighter, as the build up of those dead cells can cause the skin to look dull and lifeless.
  • Your skin will not only feel but look softer and smoother as the build up gives your skin an uneven, rough appearance and feel.
  • Using an exfoliator or scrub weekly stimulates the new cells below the surface of the skin to replace those that have been removed  (Cellular Regeneration) This is important in the ageing of the skin.
  • The weekly use will also enable all of your other products whether they be moisturisers, night creams or serums to be absorbed and work so much more efficiently.
  • Most importantly of all your skin will appear more "Youthful" and isn't that what we are all in pursuit of?

So I would like you to reassess your own beauty routine and if you are not using an exfoliator then seriously invest in one! In my opinion this is the key product to looking "younger longer",so

"Don't Accumulate Exfoliate"

MY "PEDI" IN FRANCE

I know the title of this post sounds very "glam"
Well it isn't, but it was a "Pedi" and it was done in France....

My big sis and I, on my recent trip to see her in France had a "pedi" afternoon.
We rounded up what we had..or she had more like, which wasn't very much I have to say, thank goodness for my hand cream that was used as a foot cream and travel shower gel that was used as a relaxing foot soak!

Washing up Bowl or a Foot Spa
which will it be?

The plastic washing up bowl wasn't what I actually had in mind, but she didn't have a Foot Spa...
(I thought every home had a Foot Spa judging from the amount that get sold every Christmas!)

Towels and products at the ready we had our "feet" pamper session and we managed to relaxingly soak, clip, file, massage and paint, so we didn't do too badly to say we really were not prepared for our impromptu pedicures.

Oh! did I mention that we actually didn't do the pedi's on each other, as I had my younger son with me on that trip, who thankfully loves giving pedicures and he does do a good one....I trained him well!

Thanks Scott..."I think I am needing to have one right now, so go get my nice "pedi" goodies out and I will be along when I have finished this post".

Hopefully my sister has recently read my blog re DIY pedicures to read click here and will be better prepared for my next visit!
