CHECK THOSE EXPIRY DATES

It's a new year and maybe this would be a good time to check the expiry dates of those make-up items in your make-up bag, drawer or bathroom cupboard...
If you have any of the below items older than what the list recommends then de clutter and toss them in the bin, as it has no place in your beauty life....
But how do you know how long a product is good for, if there is no expiry date on the item?

The below is a general guideline for the Period After Opening (PAO) and is represented by the logo below.

If your product displays this logo then you know that your product is good for that number of months after opening.

  • Mascaras 3-4 months
  • Eye Liner & Lip Pencils 12-18 months
  • Liquid Eyeliner 6 months or less
  • Lipsticks and Lip Glosses 1 year
  • Cream Eye shadows and Blushers 6-12 months
  • Powder Blushers and Eye Shadows 1-2 years
  • Liquid Foundations and concealers 6-12 months
  • Nail Polish 1 year

However if any of your make-up items:
  1.  Smell rancid or Waxy
  2.  Have been exposed to really excessive heat
  3.  The colour or consistency has noticeably changed
  4.  Shows signs of visible mold

Then immediately throw out !!!!

When in doubt then chuck it out, as it really isn't worth risking infection from any
"Jimmy Germs" lurking and believe me they will be there!

RECYCLING WINE CORKS

I hate to throw away anything that can be stylishly reused. I know that many bottles of wine now come with screw caps, but here are some recycling ideas for all those wine drinkers out there, that still drink wine that comes out of a bottle, with a good "old fashioned" cork in....

You may have some other recycling ideas for wine corks, if so let me know.

Enjoy!

RECYCLING AT ITS BEST!

I would like you all to think twice before throwing out your dented pots, dumping that old chest of drawers or disposing of that broken loo, as they could be recycled and in turn given a new lease of life as garden containers for plants. To me this is recycling at its very best, as each planter would be unique, fun and totally free of charge....
Maybe you have some other great ideas.....

Enjoy!

A perfect planter

Old metal teapot

This is is my favourite, as it's colourful,
offers good drainage and is weatherproof

An old stepladder gives height to the garden
and displays potted plants nicely

MAKE UP BRUSH STORAGE IDEAS

Over the years I have managed to accumulate, many different make-up brushes in all shapes and sizes. What happens is, I find a new brush, that feels good to hold and work with and then my previous favourite is retired and added to the other retirees in the retirement home, that being my make-up drawer! Also, I just hate to throw them away, as they are often still perfectly good...

Well no more! as here are some great storage ideas, that don't cost the earth. They also make it easier to lay your hand on the brush that you need, it also frees up space in the retirement drawer and gives a new lease of life to some of your long serving make-up companions.

How great is this?
Not only do these look pretty, but what a clever way of recycling those smaller condiment jars and food cans, be sure to sterilize them though, before use...

DON'T LIKE THE COLOUR....

How many of us have purchased a lipstick only to realise that once you take it home... you don't like the colour?
I know, as I have several in my drawer, but don't despair, as you can now create a new "likable" and wearable shade by blending several of those "don't like the colour of" lipsticks....play around and you will be surprised what shades of colours that you can create. Use a lip brush to either blend the shades of the back of your hand and then apply to the lips or just apply the colours directly and mix.
Also a neutral lip gloss does wonders over that "not so" great colour!

STOP LIPSTICK BLEED

Some people are more prone to lipstick bleed than others, so how do you prevent it from happening? Try these tips.

  • Exfoliate your lips weekly. See a previous post Click here to read
  • When you apply your foundation take it over the lip area and seal with a face powder or better still a foundation powder. This will help to give a matte canvas. The powder will absorb the oils from the lipstick and also hold the colour in place on your lips for longer!
  • Apply a lip liner in a similar shade around the lip line, as this will help contain the bleed or feathering.
  • Avoid very glossy moist lipsticks, as this will only encourage the lipstick to travel.
  • Apply your lipstick with a lip brush to give a better line around the lip edge.
  • After the one application you can also try blotting the lips with a tissue and then re apply a second time.

KEEP YOUR FRAGRANCE "AT ITS BEST"

We have covered fragrance "Past its Best" in an earlier blog

Here are some tips for keeping your fragrance

"At its Best"

The 3 main "enemies" of your favourite "smellies" are heat, sunlight and air...

  1. Do not leave your fragrance in direct sunlight as the sun will affect the chemistry of the fragrance and it will soon change colour and deteriorate.
  2. Do not leave in the bathroom or store it in a bathroom cupboard, especially if your bathroom becomes very hot and steamy.
  3. Always keep it in a cool dark place and if need be keep it in the original box.
  4. Fridges are not ideal as this can distort the true fragrance.
  5. The only fragrance that I would recommend to be stored in the fridge would be an Eau de Cologne as the cooling effect can be wonderful on those hot sunny days.
  6. Always keep the lid on the atomiser and the cap screwed on tightly if its a bottle.
  7. Fragrances in dark bottles will keep longer than those fragrances sold in clear bottles.
  8. Never leave fragrance in your car, as even on a cool day the inside temperature is not conducive to keeping your fragrance "At its Best".
Remember to use your fragrance daily
and
enjoy!

HANDY HINT

# Clumpy Mascara Brush
Don't pump your mascara brush in and out of the tube but rather swirl the brush around the inside the container. This will prevent your mascara from becoming clumpy on the brush. All that pumping only forces air into the tube and causes the mascara to dry out quicker than it should...

# Dry Chapped Lips
Suffering from really dry lips this winter? Then include the lip area in your weekly exfoliation routine.Use your facial scrub over the entire face including the lips. What a difference it makes! No more dry flakes of skin.Don't forget to use a lip treatment several times a day to bring your lips back into a "kissable" condition..

I highly recommend the L'Occitane's Shea Lip Balm @R115 as it contains 10% Shea Butter. It can be used by both the males and females in the family...and lasts for months.
