AFRO'S CHICKEN

What a little gem Afro's Chicken is down on Durban beachfront. The brainchild of Emil Venter, Afro's operated for 18 months from a trailer on the South Beach car park.
You will now find them operating from a yellow kiosk on the Durban beachfront path.

Alfresco Afro's Chicken

The menu is small, very small and don't expect cutlery or plates, as Afro's Chicken is delightfully simple,  expect to eat with your hands and out of a cardboard box, but this all adds to the charm.

Afro's Chicken Burger n Tjips

The chicken burger, which is actually a braai'd lean chicken breast comes with the option of peri peri or garlic, lemon marinade and is served on a fresh Portuguese style roll. The tjips (chips) are fresh, home made, hand cut and have the skins left on. Afros uses only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients making this a different fast food takeaway option.
I made the mistake of venturing from what Afro's Chicken is famous for and ordered a breakfast bacon roll, which was crammed with streaky bacon, but should have been called a fat roll, as it really was a case of hunt the lean bacon bits.
My hubby did rather begrudgingly let me taste his burger and yes...I missed out this time and ordered the wrong thing, which is highly amusing, as its normally the other way around.
I can't wait to return to have my own box of chicken "yummieness"

My "fat" roll

The view has to be the best on the beachfront while eating burger and chips out of a box, but this ain't any burger...it's an Afro's Chicken burger.

FOUNDATION BRUSH SUCCESS

Many years ago I remember trying to apply my foundation with a foundation brush, as it was the new "thing" at that time. The brush was going to replace the make up sponge and the "good old" finger application. I had little success with applying my foundation with a brush and it was not due to the type of brush that I bought, but with my method of application. I clearly remember, gingerly painting the foundation onto my face with careful strokes, hence it was somewhat a disaster.....and that was the end of me using a brush and back to the sponge it was!

You may have seen on my blog, several make up tutorial videos by Wayne Goss a UK make up artist and it was through watching one of these tutorials, I realized where I had gone wrong all those years ago. He applies foundation using a brush and there is nothing artistic about the way he works the foundation onto the skin. He uses circular and up and down brush strokes and there are no delicate movements.
He is also about to launch his own brush collection which I would love to get my hands on.

To view these tutorials click on the pink links below.

Believing that I could do the same, I armed myself with an inexpensive nylon bristle foundation brush from the QVS range at Woolworths and "Hey Presto" success was achieved. The coverage was good and even, with no brush strokes. I was able to dab the bristles into the corners of my nose and application under the eye was easy!

R89.99

If like me, you are unsure, then try using a cheaper brush like the QVS and if its a method of application that you can master and enjoy, then great, if not, then you haven't spent too much on the brush. I can already feel that a new and no doubt a more expensive and proffessional brush is on the cards.

MY FRIDAY FINDS

I found these new cheap and cheerful (CnC) "Blingy" bath and body products @homelivingspace in Gateway. They always have such a well merchandised Bath & Body section, that never fails to attract my attention and lures me over to investigate further...

The collection is called Bijou and is fragranced with Gardenia and Wild Jasmine, which is a pity as I don't care for the Gardenia scent, but the packaging alone would entice me to buy a set for a guest bathroom or a gift.
The collection contains all that you would need including the usual basics like hand wash, soap, hand lotion and foam bath. I was surprised though to see shimmering bath crystals, body souffle and a room fragrance, which are not found in most ranges, so if you are partial to a little bling and you are not wanting to pay a fortune, then this collection will be a winner all round!

DISCHEM FINDS

Whilst on a visit to Dischem La Lucia recently I came across a couple of interesting things..

You can always buy "collection" boxes of the deluxe size perfumes or edt's, either at the Duty Free at the airports or on the actual plane itself, but it is becoming more and more difficult to find them for sale as singles..
Many people have miniture fragrance collections on the "go", but to expand and grow the collection is becoming more difficult.
These sizes are also great for buying in order to "trial" the fragrance before investing hundreds of rands on the full retail sizes.

I would imagine that each Dischem may differ in which brands they have available, but the one's below sell for between R50 & R70.

I love finding a "Cheap n Cheerful" (CnC) like this collection of leak proof, plastic travel containers.
For some time now we have had the problem of not being able to take more than 100mls of any liquid onto the aircraft in your cabin baggag. It's always a problem when flying on a long haul flight overnight as you still need to stick to your beauty routine.I always take samples to use, but these containers will do the trick very nicely, for both outward and inward bound flights.
The assortment of dispensing styles will suit everything from your cleansers to your body lotions. The set also includes five round screw top containers that are ideal for all your moisturises, eye creams etc. The pack even comes with a set of labels...and all this for R27.99
Now that's a good CnC..

NOT ONLY FOR PREGNANT LADIES!

During my rummage around the Mothercare section in Woolworths last week I came across several "Cheap n Cheerful" products that can be used by anyone and not just reserved for pregnant ladies....
The one product that attracted my attention was
"It's Your Body Leg And Foot Cooling Spritz"
and has been specially formulated with menthol, lemon and horse chestnut extracts to help reduce inflammation and to cool and revive tired and aching legs and feet.
Well! I am sure we have all needed this at some time or another, I know I have on many occasions, especially after those long days where we have been on our feet all day or trundling around the shops..imagine how refreshing this would feel if you kept it in the fridge
and sprayed onto your legs and feet during those hot and sticky summer days...
or just kept in your bag to "Spritz" whenever required.
The fragrance of the lemon and menthol come through and was actually very refreshing...

The product is Dermatologically tested and hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin.

It retails for R79.99 for 100ml and makes my list as a CnC (cheap n cheerful)

HAZELS "DISTINCT" LIST

I like "Cheap n Cheerful's as they can refer to absolutely anything that is relatively cheap and good...I have come across many  'Cheap n Cheerful" restaurants and coffee shops over the years, some are still around but have moved out of the cheap category, whilst others have fallen by the wayside...there are also plenty of products out there than can be classed as "Cheep n Cheerful" which I would love to share with you via my blog in the future.....I think it's fitting to start off with an Alcholic CnC.....(Cheep n Cheerful)....I am actually a bit loathed to share this one with you and the reason is, it only came onto the market a few months ago and I get a sense of "Discontinuation" coming on.....which means it will join my "Distinct List". (discontinued and extinct)

Maybe I should give you some background into my alcoholic history...No! I am not a member of AA in fact far from it....for most of my "50 something" years I never drank the stuff. My husband always said that one of my many attractions....lol.. was the fact I was cheap to take out on a date, two Cokes lasted me the whole evening. Yes Coke! and I used to drink litres of the sugar laden beverage in my youth...I then made the difficult transition from being a Coke addict to become a TAB aholic (the Caffeine and sugar free version of Coke) and I have never looked back, I am now a convert and have stayed with the TAB programme.

Over the years I have found various tipples that I have enjoyed, but for some strange reason I seem to choose drinks that other people do not enjoy and hence they become extinct..discontinued....history...gone!

Many years ago there was a bottled version of Bucks Fizz manufactured by Tiffany's ...It was a Sparkling white wine and orange juice mixture. For a couple of years it was my tipple of choice but guess what? they took it off the market, much to my annoyance...Imagine for years you are unable to find a drink you like, then hey presto you find THE DRINK and then its taken from you, just like that, with no replacement....it was traumatic at the time...I remember it well!

So again several alcohol free years passed and then up popped the Bacardi Breezer range...yeah! I really liked the Cranberry flavoured one....I was back on the drinking scene. Then it happened to me again, they withdrew the Cranberry flavoured option....oh no! You may by now be wondering why didn't I just move over to the watermelon version or one of the other flavours Bacardi Breezers came in, well it wasn't that easy. I did try them all, but I just didn't like any of them...."difficult" I hear you say..well! Yes I am, as it has to be "love at first taste".

Another alcohol free year went by and then a friend came to my rescue and introduced me to Archers Aqua Cranberry. That was a few years ago and to date the Cranberry flavour is still around....thank goodness.

Archers Aqua

Ok back to my CnC alcoholic find....its from Woolworths and guess what? its the return of my Tiffany's Bucks Fizz well not quite, as its the Woolworths brand.

The Bucks Fizz cooler is 6% alcohol and the price when I first started to buy, was R29.95 and for several months its been available for R26.95 so this definitely qualifies as a Cheep n Cheerful, but for how long who knows?
It really is a refreshing drink and great for those summer Champagne breakfasts.
However I have noticed that several WW food halls, that did stock it, now are not.
Hence my "distinct" concern.... If another drink "bites the dust" I suppose I could always just buy the champagne and the OJ and mix my own.....sounds like too much bother!

Woolworths Bucks Fizz

Just had a thought, if you all go out and buy a bottle from your nearest WW outlet,
this will increase the demand and hopefully prevent it from becoming another drink on
Hazel's "Distinct" list..
If that doesn't work... then I will have just depleted my future supply....mmmm..not sure about this one...give me a second to think about it!

Ok.. I have changed my mind folks...don't buy the Woolworths Bucks Fizz... its awful...lol
