RAIN AT LAST

Rain at last! and I am not talking about the wet type, however this international brand does take its name for the precious resource... The first rain store in KZN  finally opened its doors on Tuesday morning to reveal a refreshing, natural and fragrant retail space, at the Gateway theatre of shopping. This is the ninth store in South Africa to open since 2005 and the rain roots have spread across the world to include a store in New York and Amsterdam.
As you enter through the tree facade you are greeted with all things natural and natural is what the founder and visionary behind this brand is all about..Bev Missing.

I was fortunate enough last week to chat with Bev for several hours and this women and her journey is truly amazing. The words, committed, passionate, caring and workaholic all came to mind as I was listening to rains birth and growth over the past 13 years. I personally have a great respect for those brands that have flourished from seeds that have been planted and nurtured by their creator, as these brands and products often have amazing and true stories. However, even more respect is given when the creator is still guiding, in this instance her "drops of rain" and ensuring that her ethos and vision is up held and is never diluted, as unfortunately happens to so many fledgling brands.I am happy to say that this brand has its roots firmly in African soil and is growing from "strength to strength".

I have reviewed several of the rain products over the past year and I love this brand.
To read some of my reviews click on the pink links at the bottom of this post.

Here is some info that you may not be aware of:
  • At rain they mould, carve, weave, pour, cut, wrap, cover, fill, stitch, knit and bead almost everything in their product range by hand and with huge amounts of love and respect
  • Rain is Fair Trade accredited
  • Beauty without cruelty accredited
  • SA Vegan Society accredited
  • Not tested on animals.
  • No child labour is used
  • No parabans, petroleum jelly, mineral oils, petrochemicals and liquid parrafin is used
  • Supports local small industries
  • Offer high quality products made from the finest raw materials in a sustainable way
  • Respects the fragile environment in every way possible.

The above table is one example of a true rain story.
Bev found this piece of driftwood on a local beach and seeing its beauty, decided to utilise
it in one of her stores and Gateway is now its new home. The heavy cumbersome piece
proved not only to be difficult to handle and manoeuvre, but it also has some stories of its own to tell.

A focal point of all rain stores is the "Deli table" which houses fizz and steam balls,
soaps and soaks, as well as earth eggs and salts.

There is so much to see and experience in a rain store,so allow plenty of time to browse.
The franchisees Yusuf and Ryan are proudly on hand to advise and guide you around their
inspirational store.

If you are unable to visit any of the stores around the country you can always order on line.

SEPHORA + PANTONE COLORIQ (FOUNDATION MATCH)

Choosing a foundation has been a little bit of a "hit and miss" affair for many of us. I am sure we have all been victims of buying the wrong shade or tone of foundation. Don't despair as this little gadget will capture a photo of your natural skin tone and will team you up with a "perfect match" from a database of over 1500 foundations that the cosmetics and beauty retailer, Sephora stock.
However I can foresee a few challenges in regards to freckled skins, pigmented skins and
will the match be suitable for the neck if only a photo is taken on the face. I am sure
that there could be miss matches, but in principle I do believe that
this service would be a "godsend" to the majority.
How cool would this be if it were available as a service in somewhere like Edgars and Red Squares.

Enjoy!

WOOLWORTHS WINTER WOOLIES

For those that aren't aware, I live in the "Fun in the Sun" city of Durban...well a few kilometers north actually, in the coastal town of Umhlanga Rocks. The year round climate is the best that South Africa has to offer and with winter monthly temperatures of between 11c-25c I am very spoilt, as I never experience cold winters!

So why am I writing a post about jerseys and jumpers from mine, and most people's favourite retailer Woolworths? Surely you need cold weather to wear a jersey? These are all the questions that I should have asked myself, when I went to their Gateway branch yesterday....but instead, I was fully engrossed in looking and trying on, their newly arrived winter ranges, the majority of which I wanted, so well done to Woolworths, your winter so far is looking good!

Predominantly, the greys and blacks feature, as to be expected for those colder months and these colours are, kinder to those extra pounds that we may be carrying..I think I may be speaking just for myself here! Yes I have gained more than a couple of pounds over the summer months...I think my SD (Strawberry Daiquiri) research is to blame.

I couldn't resist buying these three little "softies" to wear with jeans, leggings or trousers, when the temperature does drop or I move away from the sub tropical climes of my hometown! What I did like about both the grey and the peach jersey, was the shirt tail at the back, which is more flattering, as it covers a little more of the rear!

I do think, however, that I have enough to carry me through Durban's winter, so jerseys are now off my shopping list....now let me see.... boots, yes boots can be next on my list, then again maybe not!

MY "RAIN" DAY

Rain is a truly African brand and as I wrote a post about it a couple of weeks ago,Rain Please Come is unfortunately not available in KZN, much to my disappointment, However I am happy to see that you can order on line and I did buy some "goodies" whilst I was in Cape Town recently.

You really are spoilt for choice when you enter a Rain shop, as all of their products are just irresistible and believe it or not, its difficult to make your selection as you want everything!

After much time spent browsing and sniffing I made my final choices.....

I love all bath products, so I bought a selection of bath salts Passion, Saffron Tangerine and Sun dried Lavender. The price per 100 g varies dependent on the fragrance . The fragrance from the salts, absolutely fills your bathroom with the most divine fragrance and it lingers long after your soak is over. I particularly loved the aroma of the Passion salts and lying, inhaling the Sun dried Lavender fragrance was so relaxing!

I also opted for several of the Old Fashioned Soaps, which are displayed beautifully and are hard to resist, plus they are a steal at only R12 each. I also couldn't leave without this Grey Rock Bowl candle at R85, which is a handmade grey, oval shaped bowl made from quarried sand and a binding medium. This looks great in my boys grey, black and white bathroom.

I can't wait to order more products , as everything I have tried so far, has been far from disappointing and best of all they don't "break bank" either. This was a "Rain" day that I thoroughly enjoyed!

After literally weeks and weeks of rain, the sun and summer seems to have found its way back to Durban...

So armed with my card, off I went to Woolworths at Gateway Theatre of Shopping to see what grabbed my "fancy". I enjoy all the colours below and the bird sarong is very pretty, as for the rafia hat, I am not generally a hat person but hey "it's summer" and I'm now ready to hit the beaches of

JOYA FOR CHRISTMAS

I love it when I come across beautiful, new and exciting things, especially by accident...and this is exactly what has just happened! Beauty Shout Box is on Twitter and a tweet I recently made re the Kiehl's pop up store opening in Cape Town Canal Walk from mid December, got re tweeted by Victoria Fenner. Not knowing who she was I visited her website only to discover that she is a designer and creative director at Joya...

"Is all about Handcrafted jewellery made from the finest materials by a passionate team which defines the Joya collection. Internationally trend aware. African influenced and locally manufactured, Joya offers unique jewellery to suit every taste.

EARLY LEARNING CENTRE

Seeing that Christmas is around the corner I thought I would write this post on Early Learning Centre products,an extensive range of educational toys from Britain’s leading educational toy brand, which is part of the same group as Mothercare, and have been around for many years and is well known in the UK.

In South Africa Mothercare and ELC products are sold through Woolworths. The number of stores carrying Early Learning Centre products has been increased over the past year and are now available in 20 Woolworths stores around the country.

Catering primarily for children up to the age of 8, Early Learning Centre specialises in making learning fun. Every toy in the range has been created with specific design features to inspire and stimulate development through play and help bring out the best in the child.

For babies, there are toys that help develop their senses and stimulate their natural curiosity. For toddlers, there are gadgets galore that help them develop co-ordination, learn skills, and explore the world around them. Older children are sure to love the “let’s pretend” and “action and adventure” ranges designed to inspire fantasy play and develop imagination. There are also toys and activities to develop creativity and help children learn to express themselves through art and music.

All toys in the range have been manufactured to the highest standards and meet Woolworths rigorous safety requirements.

WOOLWORTHS GATEWAY RELAUNCH

I recently attended the relaunch of the Woolworths store at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, as it has been going through a transformation over the last few months...and finally its finished!

This evening event was open to VIP's only, which meant that we had free reign to wander around the whole store and shop till we drop..well 10pm, with far less customers than normal...and it was great!!

Lovely eats and drinks were provided along with this very generous "Goodie Bag" and a discount voucher to encourage a big shop!A good evening was had by all and a couple of these products below will be reviewed in the future....the only exception being the biscuits, as they have been "chomped" and I cannot remember how good they were...maybe there lies the answer, as they obviously weren't that memorable!

MIDLANDS MEANDER (Part 3)

Opposite St Ives is where you will find the Piggly Wiggly Country Village, which is perhaps the most visited place on the Midlands meander and has enough to occupy you and the "kiddiewinks" for several hours..and is a "must" visit. The village is a mix of eating places, arts, crafts, clothing and decor outlets. Recently a "Piggy Putt" was added and forms the centre piece, which is in pristine condition, as is the rest of the village.

Piggy Putt

One of my favourite shops in the village is Free Range Interiors & Clothing...where each item is carefully sourced to offer the shopper an exclusive and unique purchase. They offer Go to town - country style, classic & comfy ladies clothing. Their decor items also reflect the same style..

Clothing
Country Classic Home

Frankie & Delilah stock a wide range of beautiful and different gifting items. They are also official stockists of Trollbeads, Ice Watches, Havaianas, Hunter footwear to name but a few of their international brands. F&D has two other branches in Morningside and Bryanston, Johannesburg.

A visit to Piggly Wiggly would not be complete without a visit to the "Three Fat Pigs Cheeses & Deli", but again be warned that you will not be able to resist their selection of local cheeses, chutneys, pickles and the home baked breads, pies and quiches....all of which are very yummy! This is where we bought all our "goodies" for our picnic on our "Sundowner Island" back at Beacon Vlei.

Armed with our "foodie" purchases, which were enough to feed a "sty full of pigs" we headed back to the guest house to have our picnic and open a bottle of Woolworths Bucks Fizz! Their we sat and watched the sun go down and this rounded off a lovely day spent on the Midlands Meander..
