STILA - MILE HIGH LASHES MASCARA

Stila cosmetics have made their presence felt on the South African cosmetic scene since their SA launch nearly two years ago and I for one have blogged about several of their products and been very happy with my choices.
I am always on the look out for new and different mascara's, whether it's a new formula, brush or just the promise of longer looking lashes and I'm interested....
This soon to be launched mascara came to my attention recently and guess what,
 I'm very interested!

RSP R250

This mascara forms part of a collection of products that have been launched to mark  the 20 year celebration of Stila's artistic elegance.

The attention grabber for me, with this product, was the name...
Mile High LashesTM Mascara
Now..you tell me any female or male for that matter that wouldn't be curious about this mascara!!

Stila's press release states;

"The sky is the limit for length, lift and volume. Transform lashes with an instant upgrade and the new Mile High Lashes Mascara."
Obviously playing on the aviation connection it also states;
"Our jet-black formula glides on seamlessly, transporting lashes with length and volume that will not smudge, budge, clump or flake."
Unfortunately here in South Africa we will have to wait until October to try this little "rocket of promise",
but I for one will be hopefully adding some "flutter" to my sparse lashes and putting this mascara to the test.

Available from Selected Stuttafords & Truworths nationwide

If you have tried this product already, then please let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment.

AQUAFROST AZZARO

I must say, both the name and the ingredients of this Limited Edition fragrance from AZZARO have grabbed my attention!

AQUAFROST sounds like it could be a fragrance that my hubby and I would both enjoy.

They claim to have captured three sensations in one single fragrance.

Sensation 1.
A bracing icy freshness thanks to frosty mint, green orangey kumquats and some sparkling citrus is thrown in for good measure.

Sensation 2.
A fruity sensation including frosted grape (a new ingredient to me) is accentuated with a marine freshness.

Sensation 3.
An elegant sensation of woody Vetiver and Cypress rounds off this woody, fruity, marine fragrance.

Aqua frost 75ml EDT Spray will retail for R595 and will be available from 23rd September 2013
and I can't wait for my hubby to try....

RAIN AT LAST

Rain at last! and I am not talking about the wet type, however this international brand does take its name for the precious resource... The first rain store in KZN  finally opened its doors on Tuesday morning to reveal a refreshing, natural and fragrant retail space, at the Gateway theatre of shopping. This is the ninth store in South Africa to open since 2005 and the rain roots have spread across the world to include a store in New York and Amsterdam.
As you enter through the tree facade you are greeted with all things natural and natural is what the founder and visionary behind this brand is all about..Bev Missing.

I was fortunate enough last week to chat with Bev for several hours and this women and her journey is truly amazing. The words, committed, passionate, caring and workaholic all came to mind as I was listening to rains birth and growth over the past 13 years. I personally have a great respect for those brands that have flourished from seeds that have been planted and nurtured by their creator, as these brands and products often have amazing and true stories. However, even more respect is given when the creator is still guiding, in this instance her "drops of rain" and ensuring that her ethos and vision is up held and is never diluted, as unfortunately happens to so many fledgling brands.I am happy to say that this brand has its roots firmly in African soil and is growing from "strength to strength".

I have reviewed several of the rain products over the past year and I love this brand.
To read some of my reviews click on the pink links at the bottom of this post.

Here is some info that you may not be aware of:
  • At rain they mould, carve, weave, pour, cut, wrap, cover, fill, stitch, knit and bead almost everything in their product range by hand and with huge amounts of love and respect
  • Rain is Fair Trade accredited
  • Beauty without cruelty accredited
  • SA Vegan Society accredited
  • Not tested on animals.
  • No child labour is used
  • No parabans, petroleum jelly, mineral oils, petrochemicals and liquid parrafin is used
  • Supports local small industries
  • Offer high quality products made from the finest raw materials in a sustainable way
  • Respects the fragile environment in every way possible.

The above table is one example of a true rain story.
Bev found this piece of driftwood on a local beach and seeing its beauty, decided to utilise
it in one of her stores and Gateway is now its new home. The heavy cumbersome piece
proved not only to be difficult to handle and manoeuvre, but it also has some stories of its own to tell.

Handmade Mango soaps look good enough to eat

An array of handmade soaps

The try before you buy corner

A focal point of all rain stores is the "Deli table" which houses fizz and steam balls,
soaps and soaks, as well as earth eggs and salts.

There is so much to see and experience in a rain store,so allow plenty of time to browse.
The franchisees Yusuf and Ryan are proudly on hand to advise and guide you around their
inspirational store.

If you are unable to visit any of the stores around the country you can always order on line.

MAMAS AND PAPAS

I am so envious of the mums and future "mums to be" in South Africa, as you will now have another International nursery goods retailer from which you can buy everything for your baby and toddler. Maternity clothes and nursery furniture choices have been somewhat poor over the past few years in South Africa, but not at Mamas & Papas, as they have great ranges.
Mamas and Papas really does cater for everything a new mum needs for both herself and her new bundle of joy!

Just one of the many ranges of nursery
 furniture

Some of the Maternity fashions that are designed to be
worn post pregnancy also!

Great selection of buggies, prams and cots and cot beds

Mamas and Papas was started back in 1981 by husband and wife team David & Luisa Scacchetti, even though their roots originate in Modena in Italy, their first store was opened in, of all places, Huddersfield (Yorkshire) in the UK.

David and Luisa

This family owned business have over 60 stores around the UK and Mamas and Papas stores are literally opening up in every corner of the world, including South Africa. M&P have joined forces with the luxury clothing retailer, The Surtees group and have plans to open nine stores across South Africa over the next five years. The first opened recently in Sandton Johannesburg and the second store has just opened in the Crescent shopping centre in Umhlanga Rocks, which just happens to be on my doorstep. Its a pity it wasn't around nearly 20 years ago when my eldest "kiddiewink" was born, but hey! it will be around for when my grandchildren are born, not that any are planned just yet!

Toys,Highchairs and all baby accessories

Prams galore

There is plenty of clothing to choose from

They also have a third store planned for Cape Town (V&A) for later in the year.
I visited the Crescent store today and what a delight, it was spacious, bright and wonderfully merchandised. I have seen the brand overseas and it was great to spend time and wander around a store here in SA, I was like a kid in a candy store and it actually made me feel broody for grand "kiddiewinks".
Do yourselves a favour and visit a Mama's & Papa's store and then tell me that you didn't feel the same way!
A word of warning though....don't expect to find anything "cheap n cheerful" at M&P'S, as this is quality and the prices reflect that.

If you cannot visit a store then visit their website and check out all the beautiful things they stock.

BELLA & BOO FROZEN YOGHURT

You may have seen me on Twitter "tweeting" often about Bella & Boo natural frozen yoghurt, since they opened their first store in November 2012. I adore this fro yo and it is without a doubt the best fro yo around. Their distinctive "moo cow" themed shops are popping up all over Kwa Zulu Natal and plans are to roll out very soon to the rest of the South Africa, so what makes Bella & Boo, different from the other fro yo's on the market and how did it come about? Below is some background info about this fast growing, successful, highly addictive dessert brand!

Fact 1:
The brains and genius behind Bella & Boo is Peter Cocorozis and he has more than enough credentials in the business to ensure that his new venture will be a household name very soon.Working for Sun International followed by a stint with the restaurant group called Legends, in the late 80's and 90's, he then went on to open a string of restaurants, nightclubs and retail businesses. These were always sold for a profit and most of these restaurants continued trading until today. Peters passion is brand development/product design and interiors. He was also responsible for the whole design concept, so this is one clever man!

Fact 2:
Peters daughters name is Isabella and he fondly calls her Bella Boo. They could not use the Bella Moo/Bella Boo because a national chain had a product on their shelf already and they didn't want to step on any toes, so they threw the "&" sign in and there it was! Bella & Boo...

Fact 3:
Peter couldn't find a decent "healthy option" of frozen yoghurt to buy for his child, so he decided to develop his own! On his travels overseas he saw the fat free and sugar free options were served with fresh fruit. He liked this more natural approach, so Peter decided to do it here in South Africa for his own daughter and family and I for one, am sure glad that he did!

Fact 4:
They use only the best ingredients, natural skim milk powders, Bulgarian Yoghurt, whey, natural sugars, and coconut butter. All of these items are good for your health and thus you can feed it to your families with peace of mind. They have partnered with an ice cream factory and spend many hours on research and development. No nasty additives or preservatives, and no powders here...and you can really taste the difference...

This self serve concept is a great hit with the kids and adults alike, as it enables you to dispense both the flavours, which change daily, and the amount that you want...add to this, a selection of healthy fresh fruit and nut options....and you have a great low fat dessert. Oh! I must not forget to make mention of the "sweetie" options to add on top, but remember that you pay by weight R11 per 100grms, so don't let the kids or yourself get too carried away, otherwise your wallet will also feel a little lighter!

Below are just a few of the flavours on offer and my personal "faves" are Mango, Strawberry
 and their new cheesecake flavour.

Watch this space, as Peter has also developed a sister Coffee brand to sit alongside Bella and Boo.... now that should be interesting!

FLATTEUR CAFE {REVIEW}

Just opened last week Flatteur Cafe is situated on the corner of Regent Road and Church St in Sea Point, Cape Town. Flatteur means to "flatter" and the very attentive co owners Rafal and John have succeeded in creating a little area of peace and calm, where you can enjoy good, made to order food.

This French cafe offers a small menu of breakfasts, sandwiches, salads, coffees, teas and some home baked sweet options.

I ordered the special of Roast Butternut Soup with Blue Cheese and Chilli, which is a combination that I have not heard of or tried before. I love Butternut soup and this was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented R35

The French chocolate cake was to literally "die for" as the outside was crunchy whilst the cake was lovely and moist R30. All the biscuits and cakes are baked by Rafal.

This is another little gem in Sea Point and its a pity I am leaving on Wednesday, but I will be back for sure!

You can find Flatteur Cafe on facebook and follow them on twitter.

GRACE PERFUME {REVIEW}

"Fragrance with a cause" is what Grace Perfume is all about...the co creators Nicky Akal and Jo-Anne Gibbon had a deep desire to produce a locally made fragrance that was not only beautiful but would also help to make a difference. Their mission was to enhance a women's beauty and uniqueness, as well as encourage self esteem and self awareness. For every bottle of Grace Perfume that is sold 10% of the sale is donated to a Durban based organization called The Red Light Foundation, which is a recognized leader in combating the effects of human trafficking and the sex worker industry through the education of those communities that are most at risk. In addition to this, the Red Light Inkululeko Initiative distributes self care packs to victims, as well as equipping them with the skills that they will need for a better future.

On to the fragrance itself....and I have to admit that I am somewhat of a fragrance "snob" when it comes to locally made fragrance and have yet to find one that I enjoy enough wear let alone purchase...that was until I tried Grace.

The packaging is simple yet elegant in terms of the bottle and its outer box, but do not be fooled, as the fragrance is far from being simple....
I found the fragrance to be quite complex in its assortment of ingredients and at first was unsure as to which fragrance category it would fit into.

The top notes are a fruity burst of Bergamot, blackcurrant and raspberry, of which all are my favourites, these then make way to allow the floral middle notes to take centre stage. Jasmine, rose, freesia and purple orchid certainly stamp their mark on this fragrance. Again rose and freesia are two ingredients that I really enjoy in a fragrance. The base notes, of which there are many, cedar, sandalwood, vanilla, amber, white musk and patchouli, all help to make this a fragrance that lingers...
Initially the fragrance reminded me of a "fruity" version of Angel by Thierry Mugler, but on reflection I would classify this fragrance as a fruity, flora-oriental.
On paper this fragrance contains many ingredients that should make this a "hit" with me and a "hit" it was.
Grace has been the first locally made fragrance that I have got excited about and the creators have succeeded in making both a beautiful fragrance and one that makes a difference.

Grace 50ml edp is available for purchase online and retails for R350

COLGATE OPTIC WHITE

I think many of us, whether it be secretly and openly, all "buy" into those advertisements that promise whiter teeth...Yes.. we all want to have that dazzling white smile, just like the models in those ads, but do these products actually work?

Colgate Optic White are actively promoting their whitening products at the moment as they are about to launch a fantastic competition in conjunction with Cosmopolitan magazine:
The "Colgate Optic White Wear A Smile" competition.
All the details will be in the May issue of "Cosmo" which will be out soon...

Colgate new Optic White range claims to whiten your teeth in just a week, so I have decided to put two of these products to the test.

There are three products in the range :

Optic White Toothpaste
Optic White Mouthwash
Optic White Toothbrush

I will be testing the toothpaste and the mouthwash only! As for the toothbrush, I use an Oral B electric toothbrush, so I really didn't see the point in going backwards and buying a manual brush... The thought of it makes me shiver! I understand that this immediately goes against Colgate's recommendation of using all three products, but I believe like other typical consumers out there, that the toothpaste and the mouthwash are what the majority of people will buy into initially.

So I will speak to you in a weeks time, hopefully with a mouth full of sparkling white teeth.....
I promise not to post any photos of before and after...I won't subject you all to that....

CLARINS BB SKIN PERFECTING CREAM

It's proving to be a busy 2013 for the French brand Clarins, as we have already this week, seen the launch of their "New" Double Serum and their entry into the world of BB creams will happen soon.

I must confess, that I have never tried a Beauty Balm cream before, despite reading many rave reviews about the ones that are already out there.
To be honest, I am very sceptical that "one" Beauty Balm cream can perform so many tasks, so efficiently..... I have also been waiting for a respected brand, whose expertise is rooted in skin care, rather than make-up, to launch.... and Clarins is the one!
Clarins BB Skin Perfecting Cream will be my intro into the BB cream arena.

Clarins BB Skin Perfecting Cream announces that it will even skin tone, revitalises and protects - resulting in beautiful skin with a perfect complexion in one simple step.
Sounds great and I will be putting the Clarins BB Skin Perfecting Cream through its paces soon and my review will be posted...

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER "LE BEAU MALE" REVIEW

Jean Paul Gaultier is a French haute couture and Pret-a-Porter fashion designer. Best known for his dramatic  sculptured costume designs, the most recognizable creation being the famous cone bra, that he created for Madonna's Blond Ambition tour 23 years ago and we must not forget his "man skirt" collection.
Often courting controversy with his creations and choice of models, he has been hailed as a brilliant designer!

Its often a natural and lucrative progression for  fashion designers to crossover into producing their own fragrance collections, which he did in collaboration with the Puig Company back in 1990.
The latest addition to  the JPG male assortment is "Le Beau Male" which translated means
"The Beautiful Male"
 and
 "beautiful"
 is what comes to mind,
with regard to the hunk in the ad campaign!

KAYLAN FALGOUST

Ok!
Eyes away from the BORING poster and back to reading my review please!

The fragrance is initially a burst of freshness thanks to the mint and absinthe, which tricks you into thinking this fragrance is light and cool.
Then comes the calming Lavender, mixed with clary sage and orange blossom and the base notes are a sensual and seductive concoction of musks.
This fragrance offers a unique mix of hot and ice-cold notes.

To quote Jean Paul Gaultier himself:

"This is the scent of freshness which makes men hot.The new fragrance Le Beau Male is created to accentuate erotic potential of each man and to stimulate all sense".

The bottle is shaped like all previous editions of the Le Male collection. The Man' torso is colored in ice blue with light blue, metallic stripes over his chest. Ice cold white color accentuates juiciness and freshness, while blue metallic stripes restrain strength and energy.

HOT & COOL
is exactly what this fragrance is!
Luckily both my hubby and I enjoy the Le Male original and in my opinion it's still one of the "sexiest" fragrances around...and I love it!
Unfortunately, over the years the sailors torso lost its place in my hubbys fragrance wardrobe.
However combine the original with this new intense freshness and I am in love all over again...
Whilst retaining some of the powerful facets of the original,
 be warned....
don't expect the same sexy and sensual linger from Le Beau Male.

Sizes & Prices:

75ml Edt R685
125ml Edt R845
200ml Shower Gel R550
75g Deo Stick R385

CLARINS "NEW" DOUBLE SERUM COMPLETE AGE CONTROL CONCENTRATE

I wanted to write this "coming soon" post last week, but I had a "light bulb" moment, as Oprah would say, so hence the delay...

I worked for Clarins, both as a counter consultant and then as a travelling consultant for several years...and believe it or not, the original Double Serum was launched during this same period!
I couldn't bare to read the press notes, as the words "launched in 1985" leapt from the page and slapped me in the face! it was a "Light bulb" moment of note. I pulled myself together, but I cannot help thinking "where have all those 28 years gone?

Then as a travelling consultant, I moved around to salons, pharmacies and stores doing facials and other events in order to educate and promote this relatively unknown French brand, Clarins.
At that time, Double Serum was a ground breaking, anti ageing serum and originally came packaged in two bottles. These two dropper bottles, one green and one brown contained the two different complexes that needed to be mixed in the hand before application, giving the customer that feeling of being a home therapist! Double Serum was the ultimate product to both use and to sell...every Double Serum sold, gave you that selling "Buzz" that only a sales person would understand....and I sold many! These two little bottles achieved much success on launch and following several reformulations and packaging face lifts, it has had continued success since!

However yesterday saw the South African on counter launch of the:

"New" Double Serum Complete Age Control Concentrate

2013

This product is targeted at all women beginning at age 25 who are looking for a very complete product to address their anti-ageing concerns, regardless of their age, skin type or tone. From what I have read and understand this is the most sophisticated product that Clarins have created to date.

I don't want to comment too much, as I have not tried the product yet, but I will soon and my review will be posted! I really cannot wait to try, as any new product that effectively stimulates the five vital functions responsible for skin’s youthful beauty: hydration, nutrition, oxygenation, protection and regeneration is definitely something to get excited about!

Why not visit a Clarins stockist to find out more about this latest edition to the Clarins stable, as I am sure it will be yet another anti Ageing "Winner".

EARTH HOUR

By now you should all be aware that today is Earth Hour, but what is it all in aid of and what does it mean? Hopefully this will clarify things and I hope you all participate in some way....

1. What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a global movement uniting people to protect the planet. Towards the end of March every year, Earth Hour brings together communities from across the world celebrating a commitment to the planet by switching off lights for one designated hour.

2. When does Earth Hour take place?

Earth Hour 2013 will be held on Saturday 23 March between 8.30PM and 9.30PM in your local time zone.

3. What does Earth Hour aim to achieve?

Earth Hour aims to encourage an interconnected global community to share the opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable world.

4. What does Earth Hour ask people to do?

Earth Hour encourages individuals, businesses and governments to show leadership on environmental solutions through their actions, to use Earth Hour as a platform to showcase to the world what measures they are taking to reduce their environmental impact. Earth Hour asks everyone to take personal accountability for their impact on the planet and make behavioural changes to facilitate a sustainable lifestyle. Taking the first step is as easy as turning off your lights. By switching off your lights for Earth Hour you are acknowledging and celebrating your commitment to do something more for the planet that goes beyond the hour.

5. Is the campaign more than just lights out?

Earth Hour believes that the symbolism of the hour is incredibly important in bringing people and communities together across the globe. But our aspiration from the beginning was to go far beyond the hour itself. In 2012, Earth Hour launched I Will If You Will, a platform to incentivise and inspire individuals to share their commitment to the planet with their friends, colleagues, leaders and networks. Earth Hour also encourages and promotes many other initiatives around the world, including the Earth Hour City Challenge, the Earth Hour People’s Projects and many national and local actions that take the campaign beyond the hour.

6. How long has Earth Hour been going for?

Earth Hour 2013 will mark the seventh year of the campaign. On March 31 2007, WWF-Australia inspired Sydney-siders to show their support for climate change action. More than 2.2 million individuals and 2,000 businesses turned their lights out for one hour in the first Earth Hour event.

7. Isn't switching the lights off dangerous? What about public safety?

Earth Hour only asks people to turn off the non-essential lights for one hour - not lights that affect public safety. Earth Hour is also a celebration of the planet so it’s important to enjoy the moment in a safe environment.

8. What lights can be safely switched off?

That is a decision that has to be made individually but usually the overhead lights in rooms (whether it is your house or a business), outdoor lighting that does not impact safety, computers, decorative lights, neon signs for advertising, televisions, desk lamps, the list goes on and on. There are a few lights we can say with certainty that should NOT be turned off, including safety lights in public spaces, lights for aviation guidance, traffic lights, security lights, just to name a few. We ask people to use common sense. Before you turn off any lights for public spaces Earth Hour recommends you check with local officials or community centres. In your own home, use common sense with respect to safety. Keep small night lights on for basic safety especially in halls and on stairs. Make sure you have alternative light sources handy before Earth Hour starts, like torches or flashlights. That way if you need to see, you have a light source close at hand, and you can still respect the spirit of Earth Hour and keep yourself and your family safe.

9. What candles should I use for my Earth Hour event?

If you plan on burning candles during Earth Hour, make sure you use 100% beeswax candles or soy candles, which are gentler on our planet - smoke free, non-toxic and non-allergenic. They are also made of natural products, not petroleum-based materials, so they are effectively carbon neutral (the CO2 they emit has already been taken from the atmosphere to produce the wax). If you're using candles, though, make sure you take care. We suggest you carefully follow these tips: • Candles should only be used under adult supervision • Candles should never be left unattended • Candles should be kept away from children and pets • Extinguish candles before going to sleep • Keep candles away from flammable liquids and gas-combustible materials • Candles should be kept clear of any combustible materials such as paper, curtains and clothing • Candles should not be placed in windows as they can be blown over. Blinds and curtains can also catch alight • Candles should be placed on a stable, dry, heat-resistant surface away from drafts

10. What is Earth Hour's position on safety?

Earth Hour wants everyone to be absolutely safe and never to turn off any lights or power that would in any way compromise the safety of any individual in a private or public space. So please put safety first when deciding what lights to turn off during your participation. For Earth Hour’s broader I Will If You Will campaign, we will not support challenges that are not safe, not responsible or not respectful. So if it is dangerous, damaging or defamatory please think of others and think of something else for your challenge. We don’t encourage or endorse irresponsible behavior. Remember! Positive for the planet, not negative for life or limb.

11. Will my city go completely black?

Earth Hour is not a black out. It is a voluntary action by its participants to show their commitment to an act of change that benefits the planet. For many businesses in city skyscrapers or for many government buildings, the lights are turned off at the end of the business day the Friday before Earth Hour. So Earth Hour is more of a fade-out in some ways than a black-out. There is usually no instant dramatic difference, but rather a gradual dimming of lights starting the day prior. Many major icons and neon signs are switched off for the hour and they are extremely noticeable. You may be able to see dramatic changes in large business districts or at iconic landmarks and buildings around the world and in your city.

12. If everyone turns their lights back on at the same time will there be a power surge?

People celebrate Earth Hour in a variety of ways for different lengths of time, with many continuing to keep their lights off well beyond the designated hour. Therefore, it is highly improbable that everyone will switch their lights back on simultaneously. However, we do work with energy companies and authorities around the world, who assure us that the unlikely scenario of all lights turning back on at the same time will not cause any issues. The load reduction should not be significant enough to disrupt supply post Earth Hour.

13. Is Earth Hour an annual event?

Earth Hour is more than annual event, however it culminates in an hour of inspiration held across the world towards the end of March each year.

14. Why is Earth Hour held in late March?

The second-to-last and last weekend of March is around the time of the Spring and Autumn equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres respectively, which allows for near coincidental sunset times in both hemispheres, thereby ensuring the greatest visual impact for a global ‘lights out’ event. Earth Hour 2013 will be held on Saturday 23 March between 8.30PM and 9.30PM in your local time zone.

15. How many cities/countries/landmarks took part in Earth Hour 2012?

Earth Hour 2012 took place in more than 7001 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories across all seven continents. Hundreds of millions of people switched their lights off for an hour, and the campaign experienced its biggest growth since 2009.
